Nearly every job on a West Hollywood list ends in a wall. With no garage and no spare room, storage goes vertical, and shelves, mirrors and a bracket that gets the TV off a console it is too big for all hang off whatever is behind the paint. On a courtyard plaster wall that is the cluster most likely to go wrong.

Courtyard plaster and sixties drywall
The 1920s and 1930s Spanish courtyard apartments and bungalow courts around Havenhurst Drive, Harper Avenue, Sweetzer and the Fountain blocks are plaster over wood lath, often with a hard-troweled or sand finish. A floating shelf on that wall hangs its whole load off a hidden rod, so it has to find a stud. Arched openings and original hardware come with these buildings too, and repairing a door is usually better than replacing it.
The 1960s garden apartments around them are drywall over studs, where a fixture swap is simple. A ceiling fan in one is a different job, because it needs a fan-rated box fixed to framing before anything hangs from it.
Parking, elevators and doing it in one trip
There is almost nowhere to park on the street in most of West Hollywood, and plenty of buildings run gated or valet garages. Tell us if there’s a spot, a loading zone or nothing at all, and whether the condo building books its freight elevator in windows. Because getting the tools in is the hard part, the TV, the shelves and the patch from the last tenant’s mirror are far better value done together.
