Where a job needs a licensed contractor we say so and match you with one instead. That happens on anything structural, anything behind a wall, anything that needs a permit, and on work that goes past the state limit for unlicensed minor work.
Where a handyman visit stops
Some of what people ask about is not handyman work, and it is cheaper for everyone if that gets said at the start instead of on the day. Anything structural is out. So is anything that means opening a wall, anything behind the drywall that carries gas or a branch circuit back to the panel, sewer and main drain lines, roofing, a whole house repipe, and any work that needs a permit pulled. Asbestos and lead abatement are their own licensed trades and they are not something to have a go at.
There is also a ceiling on the work itself. California allows minor work to be done without a state contractor license, and one of the conditions is that the whole job, labor and materials together, comes to less than $1,000. Plenty of what is on this page sits comfortably under that. Some of it does not. When your list crosses that line we tell you on the spot, because a job that size belongs with a licensed contractor, and you want to know that now and not halfway through.
How the price works
You send the list. You get a price for the visit before anything is booked, and it is a price for your house and your list, not a rate card. The ranges printed on each service page are estimates to set expectations, not quotes, and the things that move them are access, what the wall or the floor is made of, and how old the fixture being worked on is.
Batching is the one lever a homeowner controls. Most of what a small job costs is the visit itself, so six small things on one trip is a fraction of six separate trips. Walk the house before you write to us and put everything on the list, including the things you have stopped noticing.
